Subject:My first rainy day
Time:11:41 am
A lot has happened in the week since I last posted. Sitting in my apartment early last week became boring to the point that two days of TA orientation left me feeling overstimulated. I learned a lot of interesting things and feel better about my chances when labs start up next week. I wish I knew which days I was TAing, though, so that I can pick office hours and generally set a routine for household chores.

My aunt had a seizure last week and was diagnosed with a cerebral aneurism, for which she had surgery. Being three hours away, I drove down over the weekend to surprise her in the hospital. She is doing well. She certainly was surprised to see me. When I first walked in she called me by my cousin's name, which was a little disconcerting. After talking with her I was assured that she was all there, if a little disoriented. I stayed with the other aunt, whom I'm convinced needs someone to baby. After the hospital visit, we stopped at a grocery store to pick up some things, and my aunt and uncle said, what do you want? I told them it was totally unnecessary and they pulled out the old poor-college-student excuse. I came home with cereal, oatmeal, two boxes of tea, cooking spray, and basil. My aunt offered to gas up my car but I told her it was my responsibility to pay for gas and all. My uncle gave me $20 on my way out for gas. I should go down more often.

Classes started yesterday. I don't feel overwhelmed yet, but I haven't slept too well the last couple of nights. Hopefully the stress will subside as I go more regularly. I knew when I took my apartment that by walking to class I was agreeing to walk in the rain, cold, and dark. Today was the first rainy day. It was messy, but I guess I survived.

Subject:I get so nervous
Time:12:16 am
A couple of hours ago I started to notice a smell in my apartment. I have gas heat and a gas stove, but the smell isn't real a rotten egg smell. It's almost like a "someone's cooking on their grill" smell. I've never had gas appliances before, though, so I'm freaking out. I can't smell it outside, really, and when I went upstairs to other apartments I could smell it faintly. None of the lights appeared to be on in the upstairs apartments, though. If I knew it was just someone cooking, I'd be more relaxed. I cooked for the first time tonight and didn't have problems. After I smelled the smell, I did the stupid thing and turned on the same burner. It turned on and off without incident. I'm upset because it's so late and I don't want to call the city with an emergency and have someone come out here only to discover that there is no gas smell.

This morning I found a cricket in my bathtub. This evening I found a cricket and water beetle(?) in my closet. The exterminator was supposed to come today, but I'm not sure he ever did. I was out for a short while, but all apartments in the complex are supposed to be checked, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't gone long enough for every apartment to be checked and the exterminator to leave.

Subject:The golden rule of furniture assembly: if it won't go in, don't force it
Time:09:37 pm
Hey, all. I had a busy, stressful, but ultimately productive weekend. I now have all my stuff, including a new bed and a kitchen-safe bug spray. After tentatively identifying the species of cricket that invited itself in, I've been leaving the kitchen and foyer lights on all night and spraying the baseboards in my kitchen every evening to deter unwelcome guests. I saw a tiny cricket yesterday morning and a spider tonight, but nothing I can't handle. The spider was resistant to the bug spray, so I got my vacuum cleaner out and sucked it up.

Speaking of, my parents went to Bed, Bath and Beyond yesterday before stopping over to price vacuums. My mom was describing to me one they saw for $60. It had a lot of nice features, she said, but it was ugly. Then she said, it's probably the color of your purse. Mom! I love my purse, and she knows it. Anyway, we picked up the vacuum, which is a fun, sparkly avacado green. I vacuumed my bedroom floor this morning and could not believe how much dust I picked up. No way the previous tenant bothered to vacuum the floor before leaving, much less had it professionally shampooed as the handbook requires. I strongly suspect the previous tenant was male.

My bedroom is shaping up nicely. I've managed to fit a lot into it without it feeling crowded. The living room is still a mess, as I've got to find ways to store a lot of things, especially kitchen things, that I don't have storage space for. I've decided that I need a bookcase and a cabinet for my kitchen ASAP. I bought a lamp for my living room, but I might move it into my bedroom eventually and get a brighter lamp for the living room. The bathroom weirds me out. The tub is in dire need of refinishing, to the point where I've debated wearing shower shoes in there. That's rediculous. I shouldn't need to cover my feet in a tub that I'm the only one using.

I explored more of the campus and city with my parents this weekend. I learned that there's a free trolley that runs between UVA and the Downtown Mall. Also, once I have a student ID, I can ride any city bus for free. Pretty nice, given that parking is at a premium in some places.

Ants
To see ants in your dream, signifies your general dissatisfaction in your daily life. You are feeling neglected and insignificant. Petty things will annoy you throughout the following day. You will learn that cooperation will be the only way to achieve your desires.

Ants also symbolize hard work, diligence and industry. Increase business activities are expected. On a less positive note, ants symbolize social conformity and mass action. In this regard, you may feel that your life is too structured and orderly.

Kittens
Your inner child, playfulness, self-responsibility. The need to take more time for yourself, have more fun, and nurture yourself and your sense of play more. Dreaming of this animal can represent:

* Having too much of one of these qualities, or that you could benefit by being less this way
* Not having enough of one of these qualities, or that you could benefit by being more like this
* Someone or something in your real life with whom you associate one of these qualities (an event, situation, threat, etc.)

For more clues, pay attention to what the animal was doing or any particular characteristic that stood out.

Subject:thanks jenn - women's healthcare notice

Planned Parenthood is gravely concerned that the Bush administration is considering a new HHS rule that would undermine women's access to health care and information. The rule would allow federal funding that is specifically designed to prevent unintended pregnancy and promote reproductive health to instead be used by facilities and providers that refuse to offer comprehensive birth control and reproductive health care services.

This proposed rule will put women's access to birth control and the information they need to make health care decisions at risk. The proposed rule will radically redefine abortion to include some of the most common and effective methods of birth control. As a result, women's ability to manage their own health care is at risk of being compromised by politics and ideology.

We have a chance to stop it. Please complete the form below to say "no" to President Bush's massive family planning sell-out. Thank you.

After trying to enjoy an overdue shower (bad water pressure, icky tub), I emerged to discover three crickets in my kitchen, to go with the one I trapped under a plastic cup. The jumpiness makes crickets hard to catch, so I decided to leave them be. Well, here I was, sitting in my bedroom perusing the Interet for cricket repellent ideas when I look over my shoulder and see one on the floor beside me. That was probably a half hour ago, and we are still locked in our battle of wits. I will not sleep until I've gotten this cricket trapped under something. And even then, I might not sleep.

Subject:One thing I don't get about the Olympics
Time:10:33 pm
I'm taking more interest in the Olympics now that baseball and softball have started up (not to mention I have loads of time), and I'm wondering, could they have constructed an actual in-game box score instead of just giving the lineups and filling in the rest after the game? NBC is offering live footage and play-by-play updates, but they can't manage a standard formatted box score that's actually readable? Anyway...

I slept surprisingly well on the floor last night. I've only seen the bugs in my kitchen, so I didn't feel anxious about them bothering me. I was afraid I'd see a horde of them when I got up, but I only saw a spider. I did see one cricket-bug this evening, so I guess they are only going to come around at night. There's a kind of hole where a tube enters my kitchen, and I think they are coming in through there. I'm wondering if the landlord would disapprove of me trying to stop up the hole, or if it's necessary to let the piping "breathe", as it were. I'm sure a determined bug could get in, but I'd feel better about having done something, at least.

I did a fair amount of unpacking today. I can't unpack kitchen stuff because I want to wipe down the cabinets before putting anything in them, and I can't do that because I don't have anything to stand on. Also, I'm just slightly paranoid about being in my kitchen right now. I don't want to have to worry that one little crumb will invite visitors, but I also don't want to not cook for a year because I'm afraid of bugs.

I went to Kroger to get some groceries. For the first time in my life, I got myself a shopping cart and pushed it around like an adult. I always disliked shopping carts because they stand for responsibility and everything about growing up that scares me. I couldn't believe what some of the products that my parents regularly bought for us cost. I know that for some things, I won't be buying a replacement for a couple of months, but still, until I have a paycheck I'll pinch every penny I have. But in the spirit of not being a working adult, I ate out lunch and dinner yesterday, and lunch today. I found a bagel shop and had an egg salad sandwich with avacado on a whole wheat bagel. It was delicious.
